The attacks in Tashkent and Bukhara have prompted a massive security operation.

The incidents began on Sunday, when an explosion in Bukhara demolished a house alleged to be a bomb-making factory.

There were several explosions on Monday in Tashkent's busy Chorsu market, said to be the work of female suicide bombers.

A group of alleged militants died in a house in north-east Tashkent after a gunbattle with police.

Residents gathered in another part of the city after hearing reports of a hostage-taking.

Special police waited at the scene, but the hostage-taker eventually blew himself up.
