Mr Mandela was greeted by loud cheers of well-wishers as he emerged from his Johannesburg house with his wife Graca Machel..

A military band played a specially-composed Madiba March and Happy Birthday.

Mr Mandela said he was inspired by "good wishes from all over the world"...

"If I have to live for another 85 years, it will be because of all the good wishes I have received," he said.

After cutting the birthday cake, he distributed pieces to disabled children...

And he felt truly at home with his long-time colleagues from the African National Congress.
