An investigation in the expenses of BBC director of drama, Alan Yentob, has cleared him of wrongdoing.

There had been concerns raised about his use of expense budgets, which were then spread in the media.

But BBC director general Mark Thompson said: "I am satisfied that there has been no dishonesty on Alan's part."

The inquiry, by chief operating officer John Smith, did however suggest Yentob had "taken insufficient care over some aspects of his affairs".

Mr Thomson said Mr Yentob had agreed to correct these and ensure proper administration of all his affairs.

The BBC has also agreed to give him better support as the problems arose during a particularly busy time for him.

Mr Thompson added: "It was in everyone's interest, including Alan's, that the allegations should be investigated thoroughly.

"Nonetheless I regret that Alan has had to endure a great deal of unfair press speculation during the process."

Mr Yentob, a former controller of BBC One and BBC Two, is currently the BBC's director of drama, entertainment and children's programmes. He also hosts the BBC arts show Imagine.
