Paintings from the German artist E.L. Kirchner, are on display at Washington DC's National Gallery of Art.
Ernst Kirchner, the founder of the Die Brucke group in Dresden in 1905, was a leading light in German expressionism.
"Kirchner's frank sexuality and fascination with the seductive pull of big city life may not be to the taste of all Americans, especially in the sombre moment of a war with Iraq," wrote BBC News Online's Steve Schifferes.

I completely disagree. Kirchner's work is a fascinating and revealing look at German life prior to and between two world wars. I think Americans who are familiar with the black and while films of Hitler and his robotic masses, will surprised by the bold colours, compositions and subject matter. That Kirchner was one of many artists outlawed by the Nazi regime will be of great interest to Americans visiting this exhibit.
