A photographer trying to take pictures of singer Britney Spears was taken to hospital on Saturday after being shot in the thigh with a a BB pellet gun.
Brad Diaz was standing outside a home in Malibu where Spears was believed to be attending a bridal shower.
Mr Diaz claimed he had been shot by one of the singer's bodyguards, though LA police would not confirm this.
"We have no idea where it came from," said Lt Steve Smith of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's office.
"It could have been somebody driving by [or] walking by."
BB guns look like real firearms but fire brightly-coloured, plastic pellets.
Mr Diaz was one of around 10 photographers standing around 200 metres from the property.
"I can't believe it." he told reporters. "I was on a public street".
Police did not identify the owner of the house but said Spears was a frequent visitor.
