The Portuguese city of Lisbon has been chosen to host the MTV European Awards in 2005.

The event, to be held at the Pavilhao Atlantico on 3 November, will see musicians from across the world descend for the celebration.

This year's ceremony was held in Rome, where OutKast were the big winners.

"We chose Lisbon because it's a young city and because MTV Portugal has been performing so well and with such enthusiasm," said MTV CEO Brent Hansen.

Worldwide broadcast

Lisbon recently hosted the six-day Rock in Rio festival which featured Sir Paul McCartney, Alicia Keys and Sting and attracted nearly 385,000 visitors.

The MTV Europe awards usually feature 14 categories ranging from pop to hip hop, and are broadcast around the world on the various MTV channels. MTV Portugal launched in 2003.

As well as attracting a celebrity crowd, the awards are traditionally open to music fans as well who are encouraged to scream for their idols throughout the show.

Previous cities which have played host to awards include Edinburgh and Barcelona.
