Rock singer Etheridge has cancer

Etheridge has cancelled shows to undergo treatment
US rock star Melissa Etheridge has been diagnosed with breast cancer, her spokesman has announced.

The 43-year-old has cancelled a tour to undergo surgery. Publicist Marcel Pariseau said a "speedy and complete recovery" was expected.

"I am fortunate to be under a wonderful doctor's care and thankful that this was caught early," the singer said in a statement.

Etheridge was due to play 11 dates in US and Canadian cities this month.

In September 2003 she held a commitment ceremony with actress Tammy Lynn Michaels.

Etheridge, who lives in Los Angeles, shares custody of a daughter and son with former partner Julie Cypher, who had the children through artificial insemination using a sperm donation from rock star David Crosby.

Best known for her folk-rock style and raspy vocals, Etheridge released her most recent album, Lucky, in February.
