Singer Art Garfunkel has been arrested in New York state and charged with possession of marijuana.

The officer arrested Garfunkel after stopping the driver of his limousine for speeding on Saturday in Hurley, 90 miles north of New York, police said.

Garfunkel, who has just completed a successful reunion tour with Paul Simon, is due to appear in court next Wednesday and faces a $100 (£69) fine.

The arresting officer did not recognise the singer, a police spokesman said.

"The trooper noted a strong odour of marijuana emanating from the vehicle," the spokesman said.

He said a small amount of marijuana was allegedly found in Garfunkel's jacket pocket.

The driver received a fine for driving 61 mph in a 45-mph zone.

Simon and Garfunkel are best known for folk classics, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Sounds of Silence and Scarborough Fair.
