Actors Guild president steps down
Melissa Gilbert
Melissa Gilbert has been president of the guild since 2001
Former child star Melissa Gilbert has announced she will not seek a third term as president of the Screen Actors Guild after four tempestuous years.

"It is no great secret that there are problems within the leadership of SAG," she said in a statement.

"There are rifts that may very well be irreparable," she continued.

Soap actress Morgan Fairchild, veteran actor Robert Conrad and former LA Law star Alan Rosenberg are among those tipped to become her successor.

Gilbert, best known for her role as Laura Wilder in TV's Little House on the Prairie, acknowledged she would depart this autumn feeling some frustration at the bitter divisions that have characterised her four-year tenure.

"All of that aside, I still believe the Screen Actors Guild is the most powerful performers' union in the world," she said.

"I want future leaders to know I will be watching them like a hawk."
