Sweet chart success for Charlie

Johnny Depp plays Willy Wonka
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has held its position at the top of the UK box office chart.

The adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic story took £4.4m over the weekend, with total takings of £19.2m.

US animated film Madagascar remained in second spot, with three-day takings of £854,270, said Screen International.

The latest Herbie incarnation, Herbie Fully Loaded, was a new entry at number five, while hi-tech action movie Stealth entered at seven.

Herbie, starring Lindsay Lohan and Michael Keaton, took £774,412 in its opening weekend, following largely negative reviews.

Stealth, which pits US Navy fighter pilots against artificial intelligence planes, had a disappointing opening in the US.

Comedy Wedding Crashers rose back up one place to three, swapping places with Fantastic Four.

The only other new entry in the top 15 was The Devil's Rejects, from director Rob Zombie, at number with takings of £318,858.
