Hugh Jackman
Van Helsing opened in cinemas across the globe on Friday
Vampire-slayer blockbuster Van Helsing has enjoyed a bumper opening weekend across the world.

A Universal spokesman said the action adventure, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale, earned $107m (£60.3m) in global ticket sales.

It opened simultaneously in 41 countries, taking the number one spot in the UK, Germany, Spain, Australia and Mexico, among others.

The Stephen Sommers film grossed $54.2m (£30.3m) in North America alone.

Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said the opening figures were "great".

The storyline revolves around vampire-slayer Van Helsing (Jackman) and a Transylvanian beauty (Beckinsale), who join forces to destroy Dracula.

Directed and written by Sommers, who was behind the 1999 blockbuster The Mummy, it cost about $160m (£90m) to produce, but has received mixed reviews.

Van Helsing opened worldwide on Friday.
