Studio head to produce Oscars

Joe Roth has worked in the film industry for more than 30 years
The head of the successful independent movie studio behind Anger Management and Black Hawk Down has been hired to produce next year's Academy Awards.

Joe Roth, the founder of Revolutions Studios, will take over the role for the first time for the 2004 ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on 29 February.

Mr Roth previously headed three major studios including Twentieth Century Fox and Disney, and has produced more than 30 movies such as Daddy Day Care, Dead Ringers and While You Were Sleeping.

Mr Roth said: "The Academy Awards are the ultimate celebration of the motion picture industry, and to be chosen as the producer of this iconic event is an honour/

"I have been involved in filmmaking for almost 30 years, and the opportunity to recognize the remarkable achievements of this year's honorees is an exciting undertaking.

"With the support and dedication of all those involved, I am confident that it will be a memorable show for audiences around the world."

Mr Roth has also directed a number of movies, including the 2001 romantic comedy America's Sweethearts and Revenge of the Nerds II.

In 2000, he started up Revolution Studios, which has strong ties to Sony Pictures, and releases so far include Punch Drunk Love and Maid in Manhatten, as well as the the box office flop Gigli.
