Double Bind offered surprising double views

The artist, who was married to the sculptress Cristina Iglesisa, was also highly regarded in his own country.

His work features larger than life-size human figures in large architectural installations like balconies and staircases.

An installation called Double Bind is currently at Tate Modern in London.

For this work Muñoz remodelled the turbine hall of the South Bank gallery with a newly installed suspended floor.

Visitors looking up into the space view an installation of sculptured grey figures at work while a different image is experienced from above.

Muñoz visited many cities to see view people's working environments as he created Double Bind over a 12-month period.

At the time the sculptor said: "I'm probably only the second artist in the world to work in such a big space.

"I'm very happy with it, I think it works. I'm sure the spectator will be surprised."

Though his work is considered very contemporary, he saw himself as a traditional sculptor, using traditional materials such as stone and bronze.
