Gay crime victims wary of police
Swindon's gay community is reluctant to report incidents of homophobic crime, according to a new survey.

The reasons included general mistrust of the police, a belief that nothing could be done and fear of disclosure of their sexuality.

The study was commissioned by a local coalition of police and other agencies.

Superintendent Richard Rowland said that while progress had been made in improving relations, there was still some way to go.

He said: "We have invested heavily in the training of Gay Liaison Officers over the past few years and around 150 members of staff have been trained altogether.

"These officers provide support for victims, families and friends and assist colleagues to deal with homophobic incidents."

During the survey, carried out in Swindon's gay venues, 18 people said they would work with officers to help break down barriers and encourage the community to open up to the police.
