A lorry accident on the M62 near Huddersfield caused huge traffic jams during the rush hour.
The driver was taken to hospital after his HGV, travelling east near junction 22 at Saddleworth, ended up on the westbound carriageway.
Police say there were tailbacks of at least 18 miles westbound, and queues were building steadily eastbound.
The entry slip roads at junctions 23 and 24 were closed along with two lanes of the westbound carriageway.
Ambulance staff had to be airlifted into the scene after a white articulated lorry collided with the central reservation at 1115 GMT on Friday.
The driver was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
Police said traffic was moving steadily again by 1930 GMT.
