Drop in empty council homes
Council housing
Occupation has generated an extra £400,000
The number of council houses standing empty in Kirklees has dropped by 40% during the past year.

Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) says it has reduced the number of empty council properties from 1,200 to 702 since its launch.

The organisation, a company owned by the council, took over the running of 28,000 homes in April 2002.

Bosses say since then empty homes have been repaired and re-let faster.

An extra £400,000 has also been generated by more properties becoming occupied.

Chief executive Simon Rogers said: "The performance achieved by our area housing teams in bringing down the level of empty homes has been truly outstanding."
