Police are warning householders in Warwickshire to be on their guard after an elderly woman paid money to a bogus council worker for gardening work that was not carried out.
It happened in Marston Lane, Bedworth, at about 1400 GMT on Wednesday, after the man called at the 82-year-old woman's home saying he was from the council.
He told her he had come to cut down the hedges in her garden and asked for money to do the job.
The woman paid him £300 but the man only cut down a couple of branches.
He left after saying he needed to get suitable equipment to finish the job and did not come back.
Officers say the man is approximately 55-years-old, 5 ft 8 ins tall, with a large build and a fat face.
He was wearing a yellow vest and was driving green and white van.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Warwickshire Police.
