Improved street lighting is to be the latest weapon in the battle against crime across County Durham.
A council investigation found that environmental factors, such as poor street lighting, contributed to fear of crime and anti-social behaviour.
Durham County Council is to spend £100,000 on new and upgraded lights to help people feel safer on the streets.
Community Safety Officers will liaise with the police Crime Prevention Unit to identify areas to be targeted.
Councillor Ken Manton, leader of Durham County Council, said: "Surveys have shown that 63% of people feel the level of crime in a community is the most important factor in making somewhere a good place to live.
"They have also revealed 45% of people feel unsafe at night.
