Bridge chosen for £1 coin design
Gateshead Millennium Bridge
The coins will come into circulation in 2007.
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge has been chosen to appear on a new design for £1 coins.

The coin will be in circulation in three years and is one of a series featuring bridge designs.

The first of the new coins, featuring Scotland's Forth Railway Bridge, was issued at the weekend when it was tossed on to the pitch at Murrayfield.

Other bridges will be the Menai Strait Bridge, in Wales, and MacNeill's Egyptian Arch, in Northern Ireland.

Collectors' item

The four coins are the third £1 design series since the coin was introduced 21 years ago.

The Millennium Bridge coin will be issue in 2007.

Alan Wallis, Royal Mint director of Collect A Coin, said: "I think it is very representative of the UK. It's new, it's modern and I think it comes across very well on the coin design."

As well as being used as currency, the coin will also form part of a collectors' pack.
