The reopening of a museum on South Tyneside is being seen as a major milestone in the regeneration of the town centre.
South Shields Museum and Art Gallery has been closed for 18 months while a £1.4m redevelopment was carried out.
The museum is the most popular heritage attraction in the borough and is seen as one of the jewels in the South Tyneside cultural crown.
It will be officially re-opened by the town's MP David Miliband on Friday.
The remodelled complex incorporates the main tourist information centre and features Tales of South Tyneside.
This includes a new presentation of the life and work of South Tyneside best-selling author Dame Catherine Cookson.
Together with the Roman fort of Arbeia, Bede's World and the Customs House, the museum is seen as providing a platform for increased cultural activity, particularly aimed at attracting young people.
