Undercover "thieves" will target students at the University of Teesside on Tuesday to help prevent them becoming the victims of crime.
Students leaving a mobile or a bag on a table may find a "virtual thief" standing over it to show how easily it could have been stolen.
They will then offer the owner advice to help prevent them becoming future victims of theft.
The initiative is part of the Home Office's Lets Keep Crime Down campaign.
Their figures show that one in three students becoming the victim of a crime each year at university, and robbery and mobile phone theft top the list.
As part of the campaign, students will also be given posters and postcards with advice on personal safety and how to secure their homes against burglars.
