Appeal over pier closure begins
Barriers on Hastings Pier
The pier was closed in June 2006 over safety concerns
A hearing which could determine the future of Hastings Pier, closed last June amid safety concerns, has begun.

The East Sussex pier's owner, Ravenclaw Investments, is appealing against the decision by Hastings Borough Council to shut the Victorian structure.

The closure was upheld by Hastings magistrates in September.

Harmesh Pooni, commercial manager for Ravenclaw, said its case was that the council overreacted in ordering the closure under emergency powers.

The appeal, at Lewes Crown Court, is expected to last several days.
