Falling metal causes pier danger
Hastings Pier
Signs on the beach are warning people not to walk under the pier
An East Sussex pier that reopened after renovation five years ago is posing a danger to the public because of debris falling on to the beach beneath it.

Hastings Borough Council has ordered the owners of the town's pier to conduct a full structural survey.

Warning signs are being put up telling people not to walk underneath after pieces of metal were found to have fallen from the structure.

The stability of the pier will be reviewed in two months.

A council spokeswoman said: "If it was in any imminent danger it would be closed, but at this stage we don't feel it is."

Environmental health officers have visited the scene and a legal notice was served on the 134-year-old pier's owners on Tuesday.

It was closed to the public for more than six months when its former owners went out of business, and then reopened in May 2001 following renovation.

The pier, which has a pavilion, a bingo hall, bars and shops, is located between Eversfield Place and White Rock in Hastings.
