New deadline for pier safety test
Hastings Pier
Traders had to go to court to keep the front part of the pier open
The potential reopening or full closure of Hastings Pier in East Sussex has been put on hold for its owner to carry out survey work.

Only the front part of the pier has been open since Hastings Borough Council used emergency closure powers on 16 June.

The council said it acted because of safety concerns over the structure.

A hearing before Hastings magistrates was adjourned until 12 September for tests by Ravenclaw Investments.

The council has carried out its own structural survey on parts of the pier and has put the estimated repair costs at £1m.

"We argued against the adjournment but we were overruled by the judge," a spokeswoman said.

Ravenclaw Investments does not agree with the council's assessment of the pier's current state.
