Progress on a project to upgrade the promenade and sea wall at Weston-super-Mare is to be presented to North Somerset councillors.
It is hoped the project will also prevent about 4,500 properties in the town from flooding.
The first phase of work will include repairs to the Marine Lake causeway, and restoring the lake.
Future work includes refurbishment of the area between Marine Lake and the Royal Sands beach.
The council is also being asked to approve the award of the £3.36m contract to Birse for the first phase of the work at Marine Lake. If all goes to plan, work starts in August and is due to finish next April.
It is hoped the work will provide a boost to tourism and economic prosperity of the seaside town.
'Major attraction'
Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, said: "[The council has] identified a number of possible improvements that we want to carry out to the original proposal, all aimed at ensuring that the seafront remains a major attraction for visitors and residents in future years.
"These will initially be focused on Marine Lake but will also include other areas of the promenade once we have discussed the ideas with local businesses and secured agreement."
Phase two, which is still in the design stage, looks at sea wall, promenade and highway and splash wall.
Work on phase two is expected to start in April 2008 and be completed by March 2010.
