One tonne of batteries recycled
Recycled batteries
Batteries contain valuable materials which can be reused
People living in Somerset have recycled more than a tonne of batteries in less than five months.

Last autumn Bath & North East Somerset Council introduced the battery recycling facility through the green box collection schemes.

Cllr Rosemary Todd said: "It is estimated that around 22,000 tonnes of batteries are sold every year in this country, yet only 2% are recycled.

"But, in Bath & North East Somerset, this figure will be much higher."

Batteries contain materials such as zinc and cadmium which can be reused.

In addition to the green box scheme, batteries can also be taken to household waste and recycling centres where there are banks set aside specifically to collect them.
