Otters will soon be able to enjoy their own crossing underneath an accident blackspot on a busy stretch of the A38 in North Somerset.
When water levels rise on the River Yeo at Congresbury, the creatures cross the road and many are killed.
The new tunnel will be scent-marked with the droppings of the local otter population to encourage its use.
A project officer said: "Road casualties are the biggest threat to their return to our watercourses."
Paul Wills of North Somerset Council added: "We are happy to assist Avon Wildlife Trust in organising the technical aspects of the otter tunnel being funded by Wessex Water."
