A Somerset grandmother has completed the first half of a record-breaking challenge by reaching the South Pole in a helicopter.
Jennifer Murray, 63, is attempting to fly from Pole to Pole in a helicopter, covering a distance of 33,000 miles.
Mrs Murray, from Frome, said the fierce freezing winds made landing at the Pole a "nightmare".
She is flying with Colin Bodhill, from Nottingham. The pair set off in their Bell 407 helicopter from New York on 22 October.
After Antarctica they will head up the west cost of the Americas, Alaska and Canada to the North Pole and finally back down to New York in mid-April 2004.
