The museum already features World War II bombers

Plans for a £12m extension of the RAF Museum in Cosford to house an exhibition commemorating the Cold War have been revealed.

Museum bosses hope the new building will attract another 50,000 visitors a year to the site, which is already a major tourist attraction in the region.

The new centre will be built in two triangles divided by a walkway and will allow most of Cosford's current outside exhibits to be brought under cover.

The Cold War display will feature British, American and Soviet aircraft and missiles.

Plans also include the suspension of a Meteor and a Jaguar jet from the ceiling of the building with a elevated viewing gallery for visitors to see the planes hanging in mid-air.

Funding for the development is set to come from regional development agency Advantage West Midlands, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund.
