Blitz on dangerous building sites
Building site
Last year 186 people were injured on construction sites in the county
Oxfordshire's building sites are being inspected in March as part of a blitz by the Health and Safety Executive.

Last year 186 people were injured on construction sites in the county. Of these, 59 were major incidents, such as amputations and fractures.

The crackdown, which will see officials making unannounced visits, is part of a national safety campaign by the HSE.

It will focus on improper handling of tools, materials and substances which can result in long term disability.

Accidents on building sites make up one-in-three of UK industrial deaths.

Andrew Gordon, principal construction inspector for Oxfordshire, said: "It can be challenging for the building industry to appreciate long-term health risks when faced with more obvious safety risks, such as falls from height.

"This blitz is designed to redress that balance."
