A hi-tech "car of the future" far above current legal and environmental standards is to be designed with the help of members of the public.
Engineers and scientists led by a team from Oxford University are putting together a demonstrator car that will show off the best of UK innovation.
It is hoped that the technology used in the Sprintcar project will be picked up and developed by car manufacturers.
People are being asked to say what they think should be included in the car.
Cutting edge
The project's website, www.sprintcar.org.uk, also invites users to outline the exact characteristics the car should have.
Dr Rebecca Lingwood, project leader, said: "We want to develop a cutting edge car which is affordable and satisfies the needs of motorists and the environment alike.
"To this end, we are consulting with car manufacturers and people in industry and we are also keen to hear the views of the public.
"Our second aim is to showcase collaborative innovative technology from UK universities and industry."
