Marian Bates co-owned the Time Centre

It follows an alleged shoplifting incident at the Time Centre on Front Street, Arnold, three weeks ago.

Victor Bates said he did not feel there was sufficient protection for businesses and he feared for his family when they were in the shop.

Peter Charles Williams, 18, faces trial in connection with the death of Mrs Bates in September 2003.

No celebration

Mr Bates said it was a very sad and emotional farewell.

"If it has just been a normal retirement there would have been some jubilation and glasses of champagne for the customers," he said.

"We have been here for 30 years and it has given us a good living and we have made oodles of friends.

"But there is no jubilation in this sort of retirement."
