The man was arrested in the city centre
An investigation is being carried out into the death of a man in custody in Nottingham.

The man had been arrested on Wednesday afternoon for being drunk and disorderly in the city centre.

Later in the day he was found collapsed in his cell and a police surgeon was called.

Attempts were made to revive him but he was declared dead shortly afterwards.

Condolences offered

A member of the public had called the police because the man was seen to be acting strangely and there were concerns for his welfare.

At about 1340 BST officers from Nottinghamshire Police arrested him and took him to Bridewell police station.

The matter was referred to the Police Complaints Authority by Nottinghamshire Police for investigation.

Authority member Anne Boustred said: "This is a very sad matter and I would like to offer my condolences to the man's family.

"I will ensure that a thorough and impartial investigation is carried out on behalf of the coroner."

The investigation will be carried out by Leicestershire Police.
