Doubts over the future of the Royal Hall in Harrogate have again arisen with the disclosure that there is still a funding gap of £5m.
Harrogate Council had been hoping the Heritage Lottery Fund would add to the £9m already pledged to the £14m restoration estimate.
But the fund has refused further help for the 101-year-old theatre which has been closed since autumn 2002.
New ways to stop the deterioration of the hall are now being considered.
