A £38m project to upgrade a section of the A1 in West and North Yorkshire has taken a step forward with the formal appointment of a contractor.
Atkins-Balfour Beatty has been selected by the Highways Agency to carry out the work on a six-mile section between Bramham and Wetherby.
The work is part of a £520m plan to develop the A1 into a three-lane motorway on a 60-mile stretch between Ferrybridge and Barton.
Work on the scheme is due to start early in 2006.
Karen Sanderson, of the Highways Agency, said: "Extensive liaison has already been carried out with a wide range of organisations and the local communities around Barton and Wetherby.
