Drivers 'against congestion fee'
The majority of North West motorists would oppose congestion charging in the region, a survey by a motor retailer has revealed.

However the motorists back the UK's first toll motorway.

Less than a quarter (23.6%) of 779 drivers surveyed, said they would like to see congestion charging implemented on the town centre routes they use.

The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority plans to undertake a congestion study in the near future.

A success

The poll surveyed drivers from Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

Seventy-three percent of the drivers also thought the introduction of the M6 Toll road has been a success.

Congestion on British roads is estimated by the Confederation of British Industry to cost the UK economy £20bn annually, according to the survey.

The National Alliance Against Tolls claimed that the people of Britain had already rejected tolls.

It said in a statement: "The people of Edinburgh were lucky enough to have a referendum on the issue and on Tuesday rejected tolls by three to one against. Given a choice most people will avoid a toll."
