Thousands to clean Dome shelter
The Millennium Dome
The eight-day homeless scheme ends on Thursday
Thousands of volunteers will be taking part in a clean-up operation at the Millennium Dome following its transformation into a homeless shelter.

The south-east London venue provided more than 1,000 homeless people with food and a bed for the night for its annual Open Christmas campaign.

Visitors could also take part in educational classes during the scheme which ends on Thursday.

A Crisis spokeswoman said they were inundated with people wanting to help.

Healthy meals

"We've had a record number of volunteers for the project this year, 1,500 more than last year," said Amy Bick.

"We organised more workshops than ever this year with arts and craft proving to be the most popular.

"We run an activities centre in east London and we're expecting to see a rise in the number of people attending the centre as a result of this scheme."

Ms Bick said it took three days to transform the venue into a shelter so they were expecting it to take the same time to convert back.

Homeless people have been given clean clothes, a haircut in a salon at the venue and healthy meals during the eight-day scheme.

The Dome is among six centres which have been used by the charity to help people across London over the holidays.
