The Briton held hostage by Iraqi militia for six days has arrived back in the UK.

Gary Teeley, 37, from Woolwich, south-east London, is said to be recovering at an unconfirmed location with his wife and eight-month-old son.

He was handed over to Italian troops early on Sunday and taken to a field hospital for medical checks.

Mr Teeley had been working in Nasiriyah for a laundry firm serving coalition forces when he was snatched.

Mr Teeley had gone to the southern city as a replacement for a colleague from the company called QIT.

He had been living in Qatar with his wife and young son for the past three years.

Mr Teeley's mother Patricia, 60, who lives in Raunds, Northamptonshire, is said to be elated but exhausted.

A family friend Sylvia Law said: "Gary is back and they are going to have a few days rest before they actually come home. He is with his wife and son.

"Pat has spoken to Gary again and he is still in shock. He will go through the coming down process and the reality is going to hit him."

On Monday, Mr Teeley described his captivity as "mental torture".

He said: "There was two or three different instances when I thought this was the time, this is no more and this is where it all stops.

"It is something that you read about and you never think it would happen to you."
