Village primary forced to close
A small Lincolnshire village school is being forced to close because of declining enrolment.

The county council has issued Rippingale CE Primary School near Bourne with a formal notice.

The decision comes after the school, which has 20 children on its register, failed to attract more pupils.

Children on the school roll on 31 August will be offered places either at their nearest appropriate school or the nearby Horbling Brown's CE Primary.

The school will close on Friday.

'Great disappointment'

Patricia Bradwell, executive councillor for children's services, said the decision to close the school had been made reluctantly.

The school has been operating well below its capacity for 89 for some time.

"Parental preference for other schools has sadly led to this situation - there are currently 132 children living within close proximity of the school," Ms Bradwell said.

"It is always a great disappointment to see schools like Rippingale close when they should be at the heart of their communities," she added.

Elsewhere, it has been announced that two Lincolnshire special schools are to close.

The Beckett School and the William Harrison School in Gainsborough will be replaced by separate primary and secondary special schools which will form part of the town's new "educational village" which is expected to be up and running in 2009.
