Cathedral charges wipe out debt

Charging visitors to Lincoln Cathedral has helped clear debts
A controversial decision to charge visitors to enter Lincoln Cathedral has paid off financially, according to church officials.

Until recently, the minster had an accumulated debt of £600,000, but it is now back in the black. The most recent accounts show a surplus of £141,000.

Dean of Lincoln Alec Knight said the cathedral had earned twice as much money since charging began.

Fees for visitors replaced voluntary donations in April 2000.
