Resort's fisherman 'overexposed'
Jolly Fisherman
East Lindsey District Council decides where the mascot should go
Skegness' Jolly Fisherman mascot has been criticised - for attending too many events.

Town councillor Phil Kemp says the places where "Jolly" appears are not always in keeping with his character, and should be selected more carefully.

He claims East Lindsey District Council has a policy that "all publicity is good publicity".

But an authority spokesman rejected the complaint and said "Jolly" promoted the family image of Skegness well.

'So bracing'

Coun Kemp raised his concerns at a town council management meeting, saying "Jolly seems to turn up at any event he is invited to."

He told the BBC: "We want Skegness to be known as a family resort.

"Is it appopriate that he ought to be going to lots of different functions which in some respects aren't particularly relevant to the resort of Skegness as we like to portray it?"

He said Skegness Town Council, which owns the mascot's copyright, should have more control of the situation.

East Lindsey District Council currently decides where the mascot should go.

Skegness is famed for its "So Bracing" Jolly Fisherman logo, and was the place where Billy Butlin opened his first ever holiday camp.
