Thousands caught jumping lights
traffic lights
Cameras are catching the red light jumpers and cutting accidents, it is claimed
More than 11,000 people were fined last year for driving through red lights across Leicestershire and Rutland.

Ten cameras recorded one in 500 drivers jumping red traffic lights. But the cameras are also said to have cut crashes by up to 70% at some locations.

Police said they have to demonstrate there have been accidents before the area can qualify for cameras.

The 11,131 offences in 2004 work out at 0.2% of drivers going through a red traffic light.
