Police are warning parents in Leicestershire not to break the law by giving their children a 'Goped'.
They say parents are unaware that the motorised scooters are subject to the same laws as motorbikes.
Although a popular present for teenagers, they cannot be ridden on the roads or by anyone who does not have a driving licence.
Officers are warning teenagers who are caught riding them on the roads without a licence will be taken to court.
Pc Calvin Bailey, from Eyres Monsell police station, said: "If anybody is actually purchasing one of these Goped's or scooters then they need to be aware that they can only be used on private land.
