MPs step in over budget plans
Leicester's MPs are meeting the city council leader to discuss the proposed £2m cut in grants to community groups.

They want to call in the government to reduce the proposed 14% increase in council tax.

Keith Vaz, Jim Marshall and people representing Patricia Hewitt will meet Roger Blackmore to express their concern over the spending plans.

The council said it has a £10m budget deficit to make up but the Labour MPs pointed to a significant rise in funding from the government.

Keith Vaz has offered to arrange a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to ask for help.

But he has warned the council tax rise could be capped unless it is reduced to a single figure.

The budget proposals will go the council cabinet for approval on 16 February.
