Trees planted for woodland site
Volunteers working on a new community woodland in Kent are planting the first of several hundred trees on Saturday.

The land in Bearsted has been bought from developers by a resident, who has handed it over to a trust so it can be turned into a community amenity.

Many local people have contributed to buy a tree as part of the Bearsted Woodland Trust plant a Tree Scheme.

One of the features of the site will be an avenue of 38 oak trees alongside an existing public footpath.

Each of the trees will have a plaque bearing the name of the donor, or a message.

Peter Willson, deputy chairman of the trust, said the project had resulted in a "fantastic upsurge in community spirit".

"It is amazing how many people are keen to play a role of one sort or another," he said.
