The plans for the sex shop were rejected by councillors

Six people living in the Carlisle Street area had objected to the opening of the adult theme shop.

Police and council officials did not block the scheme which would have been in a mixed residential and retail area.

But the local residents objected to the shop owner's licence application claiming it would attract "undesirable people" and lower the tone of the area.

Wrong location

The residents also said they considered some of the items which may have been sold at the shop would have been offensive to women and children.

Councillors rejected the advice of their own officers and backed the residents by refusing to grant the store a licence.

The politicians said it was the wrong location for a shop selling adult material.
