The government confirmed on Thursday that the city is one of the areas under consideration for funding for further flood defences.

The city has suffered an increased risk of flooding from the River Wye in recent years.

The news came during a meeting with members of the Hereford Campaign for Flood Defences.

Study results

Hereford MP Paul Keetch and campaigners met Environment Minister Eliott Morley to discuss funding for the city's flood defence scheme.

They also presented a petition of 2,000 names in support of the proposed scheme.

Campaign spokesman Bob Binnersley said the meeting went very well and they had highlighted the need for flood defences in Hereford.

The results of a study into whether Hereford's scheme is technically possible are expected next year.
