Bogus callers target the elderly
Elderly people have been sent warning letters about bogus callers after a woman ran screaming from her home when she discovered three intruders.

Notes have been put through the doors of houses in Basingstoke, Hampshire, after three homes were targeted.

During the first incident, a man searched the home of a 90-year-old woman in Shooters Way, after claiming to work for the council on 8 March.

Similar incidents occurred at two other properties in Doswell Way on 10 March.

An 81-year-old woman ran screaming from her home after she discovered two men inside.

They had entered while she was being distracted by another man whom she found in her garden as she put her cat out, shortly after 2110 GMT.

An 89-year-old woman's bedroom was also searched after a man gained entry through an open window between 1800 GMT and 2200 GMT, police said.

Nothing was taken but Thames Valley Police hope the notes will encourage the elderly to be more cautious.

Two of the intruders have been described as white and aged between 20 and 30.
