Customs seize £2.5m drug haul

The cocaine was broken down into 1kg packets
Customs officers in Portsmouth have seized a haul of cocaine worth over £2.5m hidden in a cargo of onions.

The 50kg stash was found in a lorry which arrived on a Brittany Ferries vessel from Caen.

Officers stopped the vehicle as it disembarked at Portsmouth docks at around "!)) on Friday.

The Spanish driver, Jean-Paul Abad, appeared before magistrates on Monday charged with attempting to smuggle class A drugs.

The drugs were found, broken down into one kilogram packets, hidden amongst packages of onions.

He was remanded in custody and will appear again on 5 May.
