Motorists caught in drink-drive campaign
Police breath test
Police say 23 people were arrested for drink-driving in a week
Gloucestershire Police say more than 20 motorists have been caught in the first week of their Christmas drink-drive campaign.

The force say that 578 drivers were pulled over during the first week of testing.

Of those, 23 drivers were arrested for either being over the limit or refusing to give a breath sample.

Two tests for driving under the influence of drugs were carried out, and one arrest was made.

Last year, more than 5% of motorists tested for drink-driving in the same week were over the limit, compared with 3.9% this year.

Inspector John Pickersgill said: "It is disappointing that these people were arrested for drink-driving offences.

"Their recklessness could have caused death or serious injury to themselves or others."

Police say that motorists who are stopped and have consumed alcohol, but are under the limit, will be shown "hard-hitting" videos.

They are designed to demonstrate the effect drinking even small amounts of alcohol can have on driving performance.
